The Flight of the Red Knot: A Natural History Account of a Small Bird's Annual Migration from the Arctic Circle to the Tip of So by Brian Harrington,
The flight of the red knot is one of the most spectacular long-distance migrations in the world. A member of the sandpiper family, the red knot is barely ten inches long animated knots and weighs about twenty ounces. Each year, these small russet-colored birds breed in the Arctic, then migrate to the tip of South America animated knots and back again in their quest for food. Why animated knots and how they travel more than 18,000 miles each year, often as much as 2500 miles nonstop (and at speeds averaging between thirty animated knots and forty miles per hour), is the subject of this captivating animated knots and beautifully illustrated book. Aided by hundreds of volunteers along a vast flight path, author Brian Harrington has been tracking shorebirds like the red knot since 1972 to determine whether conservation measures are needed to protect their rich stopover sites. His findings are surprisingly simple, animated knots and shocking: of the many sites where birds stop to feed in their journeys north animated knots and south, a handful are crucial to the survival of ninety percent of the birds. If these sites disappear, the birds animated knots and many other creatures will also disappear. Derived from the popular NOVA film "Mystery of the Animal Pathfinders", which was based in part on Harrington's fourteen-year field study, The Flight of the Red Knot describes in detail the remarkable physical characteristics of these long-distance fliers, their astounding food-storage capacity, animated knots and the ever-moving nature of their food supply, as well as the methods of research used to chart the red knot's life cycle.

Islands of Hope: Lessons from North America's Great Wildlife Sanctuaries by Phillip Manning,
North American wildlife is under siege. First came the hunters, who spread across the continent killing animals for food animated knots and clothing animated knots and because they were dangerous. Then came the developers, who continue to chip away at our wilderness at a rate of over a million acres per year. It wasn't until 1903 that the first North American sanctuary specifically aimed at protecting animals was established. Today, the continent is peppered with thousands of public animated knots and private refuges -- green islands of hope for wildlife. These sanctuaries have saved species like whooping cranes animated knots and trumpeter swans from extinction animated knots and allowed others like American bison animated knots and Canada geese to recover in number. Islands of Hope visits ten preserves in four North American countries. At Cape May National Wildlife Refuge, Phillip Manning examines the dependence of one of nature's farthest-traveled animals -- the red knot -- on one of its oldest animated knots and slowest -- the horseshoe crab. At El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Preserve, he tells of the impossible migration of a creature that weighs one-fiftieth of an ounce -- animated knots and the equally captivating story of the human effort that tracked the eastern monarch to its wintering ground in Mexico. At the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, he describes the effort to bring back not only North America's largest land animal -- the American bison -- but also an entire landscape as it existed hundreds of years ago. At Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, he tells of the pronghorn antelope animated knots and its stalker, the coyote, animated knots and the dilemma faced by those humans who would manage -- or not manage -- relations between the two. Behind Manning's fascinating accounts lies the serious purpose of learningwhat makes these ten preserves successful.
